In Lake Nona an Orlando Police Department Officer Left a Rifle in Their Vehicle Overnight and Someone Stole It
Twice in the span of less one month a sub machine gun and a rifle were left inside unmarked police vehicles steps away from apartments filled with families and were subsequently stolen.
- On January 28th an Orlando Police Department SWAT/TAC Officer left their submachine gun overnight inside an unattended OPD vehicle in a Baldwin Park apartment complex parking lot and someone stole it.
- On February 14th, according to Orlando Sentinel, a AR-15 rifle was stolen from an unmarked police car that the cop left in the vehicle overnight. It occurred in a Lake Nona apartment complex parking lot. The gun mount locking device was stolen as well.
According to OPD Policy and Procedure 1802.13 Use of City Vehicles, it is not against OPD regulations to leave such weaponry in unattended OPD vehicles so long as the vehicle is locked, the property and firearms are placed in a locking device (i.e., MCT mount or Agency-approved gun-securing device), and the vehicle's alarm system is operational and activated.
But those policies and procedures were thrown out the window Tuesday by OPD as all firearms must now be taken inside Officers' homes and not left in their vehicles overnight. The Orlando Sentinel says OPD is seeking to alter their guns-in-the-car-overnight-in-residential-areas policy.
