Solar Trash Compactor Pilot Project Coming to Downtown

Downtown Orlando is getting solar trash compactors as part of a City of Orlando pilot project. They have plans to expand to other walkable urban areas at the completion of the pilot according to Chris Castro, Director of Sustainability for the City.

The City is also working on sensors on these compactors and dumpster bins to dynamically schedule pick-ups.

In 2011 the City of Kissimmee installed 30 solar trash compactors after a successful pilot program. Also in 2011, LYNX installed 9 at Osceola Square Mall Transfer Center (4), West Oaks Transit Center (2) and Seminole Center Transit Center (3).

Castro shared the information at the June 14, 2017 Advisory Council meeting of the Downtown South Neighborhood Improvement District.
