What Do We Get for the $3,000 We're Paying City's First Poet Laureate?

On July 12th Mayor Dyer announced the City's search for Orlando's First Poet Laureate after a process was developed. Susan Lilley, a teacher and published poet, was selected and is being appointed by the Mayor as Orlando's first Poet Laureate for a term of one year, with annual renewals by the Mayor for up to a three year term. The Poet Laureate's contract includes a $3,000 annual honorarium.

The purpose of the Poet Laureate is to promote poetry and the appreciation of poetry among the public and inspire emerging generations of literary artists and readers of literature. Orlando's Poet Laureate is the city's official storyteller, who will reflect the diverse, inclusive spirit of our community.

Duties:
  1. The Poet Laureate shall present original works of poetry at up to four of the Mayor’s and/or City’s annual events per year, as requested by the City of Orlando. 
  2. The Poet Laureate will present to local students/youth a minimum of six (6) times per year, one per City Commissioner’s district and will be featured in the United Arts’ directory of available education programs on www.UAArtsEd.com. 
  3. The Poet Laureate will work with The City of Orlando, United Arts and/or Burrow Press to facilitate press coverage for key events. 
  4. The Poet Laureate will be featured in an issue of United Arts’ bimonthly publication, Orlando Arts Magazine. 
The seven-member Poet Laureate Selection Committee:

  1. Linda Landman Gonzalez, Chair
  2. Cecilia Rodriguez Milanés, University of Central Florida Leo Linares, Orange County Library System
  3. Ryan Rivas, Burrow Press
  4. Vidhu Aggarwal, Rollins College
  5. Shawn Welcome, Performance Poet
  6. Dr. Shari Koopman, Valencia College

The committee recommended three finalists, who were interviewed by the Mayor:

  1. Terry Ann Thaxton
  2. Curtis X Meyer
  3. Susan Lilley
Mayor Dyer will introduce Orlando's first Poet Laureate, Susan Lilley, at the October 23rd City Council meeting and thank the Poet Laureate Selection Committee and partners.
Terms & Compensation:
  1. The Poet Laureate is permitted to accept honoraria or remuneration from host organizations during the term of service, with the City’s prior approval. 
  2. The Poet Laureate reserves the rights to any compensation from his/her poetry during his/her term. 
  3. The City of Orlando may publish and/or distribute such poetry without charge to the city, except covering costs. 

Grant of Rights:

The City will share rights with Contractor. Contractor agrees to and does hereby assign to City first serial rights for print and all formats of e-book publication. Contractor agrees to and does hereby assign to City a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive license to use the Work online. Any future use of the Work would constitute a new agreement between the Contractor and the City. The City may use the Contractor’s name and likeness in publishing, promoting, advertising and publicizing its publication and information products and services, and in merchandising.

Permissions:
The Contractor agrees to obtain all permissions necessary to use materials copyrighted by others, if any. The cost of providing these permissions shall be borne by the Contractor. Unless agreed in writing by the parties, permissions shall be obtained in writing and copies shall be provided to the City when the Work is delivered or as otherwise requested by the City.

Warranty:
The Contractor represents and warrants that he or she is able to enter into this Agreement. The Contractor warrants and represents to the City that he or she is the sole Contractor and creator of the Work, and he or she owns all rights granted under this Agreement; the Work is an original creation and has not previously been published in any form (unless a permission has been obtained), it is not in the public domain, it does not infringe any other party’s copyright or other intellectual property rights, nor does it violate the rights of privacy of, or libel, any other person or entity, and it will not give rise to any claim by, any third party, including but not limited to claims based on copyright, defamation, physical injury or invasion of privacy or publicity. The Contractor further warrants and represents to the City that this Agreement does not conflict with any other contracts, memberships in trade associations or unions, understandings or arrangements between him or her and any other person or entity.
