For almost a decade the Winter Park High School Chorus has honored the memory of student Tyler Rush with a benefit performance to provide scholarships to deserving chorus seniors called "Night on Broadway," a fully-staged, choreographed and professionally produced musical review.
This year’s performance was April 30, May 1 & 2 and featured the revue "Smokey Joe’s CafĂ©," showcasing pop standards, rock and roll, as well as rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
Winter Park choral directors Matthew Swope and Sherlee Glomb teamed up with Penny Ayn Maas. Ms. Maas appeared on Broadway in Crazy for You, the revival of Damn Yankees with Jerry Lewis and the most recent production of Cabaret at Studio 54.
The finale of the show was the performance of a commissioned piece in memory of Tyler Rush written by composers Jason Howland and Dani Davis. Mr. Howland composed and Ms. Davis produced the Broadway musical Little Women – The Musical.
Since the inception of Night on Broadway, more than $60,000 has been awarded in scholarships to deserving chorus students from the money raised through this event.
