The next meeting of the Orlando Regional Group of the Florida Chapter of the national movement Congress for the New Urbanism is Tuesday April 13, 2010, 5:45pm, at Citrus restaurant (821 N. Orange Ave. Orlando, FL 32801.

A presentation and discussion called "Bringing Ciclovia to Florida" will be led by Kathryn Moore, a Miami resident and former organizer of Bike Miami Days. She will discuss the significance of ciclovias and similar public engagement efforts and their ability to positively impact Florida cities.
How do we communicate to citizens the important of urbanism and multi-modal transportation? Bike Miami Days is patterned after the South American "Ciclovia" during which the city closes streets to vehicular traffic for several hours on the weekend in order to open them to pedestrians and cyclists encouraging citizens to inhabit city spaces in a new and different way. The success of these project has encouraged some U.S. cities to follow suit. Ms. Moore will discuss not only the logistics of pulling of such an effort but also the importance to planners and local governments of pursuing unconventional and successful new ways to promote civic engagement, sustainability and multi-modal transportation in their communities.

Kathryn Moore is the Executive Director at South Florida Bike Coalition and co-founder of the Miami Open Streets Team. She formerly organized Bike Miami Days as an employee of Mayor's office at the city of Miami.
