Orlando Philharmonic: Streaming is the new venue

The Orlando Philharmonic is offering a LIVE Web Simulcast of its upcoming concert, Color Cathedral, on Saturday, April 17 at 8:00 PM on OrlandoPhil.org. This is the Orlando Philharmonic's first live simulcast of a performance.

Like I said, streaming is the new venue, y'all.

Led by Music Director Christopher Wilkins, Color Cathedral features the Orlando Philharmonic performing Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture, Respighi's Church Windows and Debussy's Sunken Cathedral.

Highlighting the program is a world premiere by Composer-In-Residence Stella Sung, titled The Circle Closes. A unique feature of The Circle Closes is the use of crystal “singing” bowls as part of the instrumentation. These types of bowls are often used in meditation and healing practices. Sung says, "As a musician, I was drawn to the inherent sound quality of the bowls and felt that their presence would lend an almost 'other-worldly' quality to the piece." Making the work even more exciting is the addition of brilliant lighting effects, designed by Ray Zwarich, formerly of Cirque de Soleil, to enhance the music. Maestro Wilkins calls it "one of the most spectacular light shows ever conceived for a "classical" symphonic concert."

In advance of the concert, web viewers can enjoy on-demand videos of past Philharmonic events and read the program notes to the pieces they are about to hear.
