Tony Kushner in Orlando at Rollins College

Rollins College’s Winter Park Institute will host award-winning American playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner April 12, 2011 at 7pm at Rollins College, Keene Hall inside Tiedtke Concert Hall (1000 Holt Ave., Winter Park, Fla. 32789). Free and open to the public.

Kushner will discuss American theater, current events and his upcoming work. A recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993 for his play Angels in America, he is widely recognized and acclaimed for his rejection of conventional beliefs in playwriting.

“Kushner, through his craft, has revolutionized theater,” said Gail Sinclair, executive director of the Winter Park Institute. “He forces the audience to reassess their views by giving voice to those who have been rendered powerless by society.”

Kushner has taken pride in tackling some of the most difficult subjects in contemporary history, including AIDS, Reaganism, the rise of capitalism and racism. He is the recipient of an Emmy Award, two Tony Awards and a Cultural Achievement Award from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture. In addition, Kushner co-wrote the screenplay for the film Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg, which was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2005 Academy Awards.
