The city of Apopka was incorporated in 1882. By 1912, growing ferns became one of the largest industries in the Apopka area, and soon Apopka developed the name “Fern City.” More tropical plants were introduced to the growers in the area in following years. This two-day juried arts and fine crafts festival, which showcases a number of our local nurseries, not only benefits Apopka, but surrounding communities as well. In 2009, between 35,000 – 37,000 people attended. Over $20,000 in proceeds from this event went back into the community through donations to:
- Loaves and Fishes
- Apopka Little League
- Pop Warner Football
- R.O.C.K. Camp
- Seniors First
- Operation Smile
- Scholarships
- Special Olympics
- Canine Companions
- The Museum of the Apopkans
- over 20 recipients in all.
A number of the recipients of our donations are on a continuing basis year after year.
