Florida Film Festival: 5 Titles With People You've Heard Of

The most common criticism I hear of film festivals, especially smaller ones like FFF2012, is that for the casual movie fan, there's not much to see. Of course, I tell them that there are always plenty of great titles to choose from, but I can see their point to some extent. It's nice to see some familiar faces, and so, here's my list of 5 films with actors that people may recognize.

RENEE: This is the opening night movie, and it's the story behind the To Write Love On Her Arms movement. It was shot entirely here in Orlando, and stars Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Thor, TV's 2 Broke Girls) and Chad Michael Murray from One Tree Hill. Plus there are brief cameos from musicians Travie McCoy and Rachel Yamagata.

HEADHUNTERS: So I didn't know much about this, and then they played the trailer at the Press event the other night, and two holy craps. Holy Crap #1: This looks awesome! and Holy Crap #2: That's Jamie Lannister from Game of Thrones! Or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, as his passport probably calls him. This Norwegian thriller looks excellent.

SEE GIRL RUN: I'll be honest - this one caught my eye because it stars Adam Scott, known for 'Party Down', 'Parks and Rec', 'Being Handsome'. He co-stars here with Robin Tunney and Josh Hamilton, who was the lead in the movie 'Outsourced', which was quite good and led to the terrible short lived NBC comedy. No idea what this film is like, but I'll give it a look.

JOHN DIES AT THE END: Don Coscarelli's first film since the amazing 'Bubba Ho Tep'. Playing twice at the festival as a midnight movie. Starring the mighty Paul Giamatti. About a drug called Soy Sauce. SO EXCITED.

EYE OF THE HURRICANE: A Florida Film, set in the Everglades, this is the directorial debut of Rollins grad and current UCF professor Jesse Wolfe. Set in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane, it stars Melanie Lynskey, who was in 'Up in the Air' and 'Win Win', and an episode of 'How I Met Your Mother' that I saw the other day. And Campbell Scott ('Roger Dodger', TV's 'Royal Pains') and Brian Doyle-Murray ('Groundhog Day') are also involved.
