Penguins On A Plane? Enough is Enough!

On June 20, 2013 Southwest Airlines unveiled its newest themed airplane. The Boeing 737-700 is the latest in a strong 25 year partnership the airline has had with SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment that began back in 1988 when the airline debuted Shamu One, a Boeing 737 that was themed after SeaWorld’s most famous resident. The airline now features two airplanes with images of SeaWorld’s killer whales.

The new plane features a giant image Gentoo penguins; towards the front of the plane one is swimming with other penguins towards the rear of the plane looking forward. The penguin image a celebration of the recently opened penguin attraction, Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, which recently opened at SeaWorld Orlando.

The unveiling took place at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and featured live penguins, community members, along with and executives, including Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, CEO Gary Kelly, and SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment President and CEO, Jim Atchison.

Speaking at the event Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said "Penguin One is a natural addition to the Southwest fleet and a great representation of the evolution of our partnership and our mutual dedication to travel, tourism and family entertainment."

The plane will make appearances in both San Antonio and San Diego, the two other cities that feature SeaWorld, before going into regular service.

Southwest is known for the unique paint jobs its planes.  Other design themes include nine different states, including Florida, and a specialty plane, “Triple Crown One,” painted to commemorate Southwest’s customer service achievements.
