Hoods

College Park | Reworked 40s teensy houses, lots of shady oaks and a strip of so-so shopping make the semi-rich residents happy. Get a drank at "Infusion Tea" and shop local artisan-ware at "Cottage Industries" shop.

Milk District | Photos | Shops for hipsters in want of skateboards, homemade earrings, beer and occasional street parties. Orlando's east village.

International Drive | The part of Orlando most tourists are familiar with. Winding narrow streets lined with craptastic Mickey Mouse stores, buffet breakfasts, almost-malls and putt-putt courses. A sad face on a happy town.

Fairbanks Ave (from I-4 to Mills) in Winter Park | Tragic for now. Reminds me of a dumpy version of 3rd Ave in LA.

South Eola District aka Thornton Park | Hair salons, one local bookshop, some local clothing stores, a Starbucks, a wine bar, and a couple popular restaurants. Grafitti Junction has a fun, non-snotty attitude. There's a fountain in the middle of one intersection.

Mills 50 | What should be our city's Chinatown has now been branded "Mills 50." Asian restaurants, shops and a legenday hobby shop.

Downtown Arts District | OK, I don't understand what this is. The city of Orlando has this thing called "downtown arts district," but its really... downtown. Galleries, restaurants and bars. At night its more like a party zone than an arts district.

Audubon Park | Stardust Coffee is THE hub of anything interesting going on in Orlando. Must visit. The hood's weekly Wednesday market happens there and is a wild and wacky hipster trip with fresh dinners for sale, used clothes, original weird artwork, massages, tarot card readings and that dude who spins. R Nichols stationary shop, Bold Hype gallery, Bikes Baans and Bordeaux (that name!) and Park Ave CDs are also worth a visit.

Baldwin Park | Its the most perfect 1950s neighborhood created in the 1990s. Built on a former air force base (or army, whatever), the fake downtown is on a waterfront and will be high-end in five years, I predict. Right now its a weird mix of Subway sammiches, an art studio for children, Publix, CVS and a bunch of other random stuff. Park your car and walk through the houses area of Baldwin Park. Nice stroll.
