Thursday - January 13

of Montreal/Kid Sister at Club Firestone

You never know what to expect at an of Montreal show. They're one of those bands who are nice enough to come down to Florida fairly often, and it's always an event. Latest album 'False Priest' was as well-received as ever, and when they played in NYC last year, Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon came out and spanked a dude in a pig suit. Even though that probably won't happen again, it'll still be an acid-trip costume party with a killer soundtrack. And just to keep things eclectic, support is from Chicago-based rapper, Kid Sister.

Friday - January 14

Big Boi at House of Blues

I think this must only have been announced very recently, but it's sure to be a barn-burner. The less-celebrated half of Outkast put out one of last year's best-reviewed albums, which included 'Shutterbuggs' and 'General Patton', two of the year's best singles. He's been known to bust out some Outkast classics onstage too, so this is pretty much unmissable stuff.

Sunday - January 16

Cake at House Of Blues

Fifteen years (!) after 'Going the Distance', Cake are back with a new album called 'Showroom of Compassion', which is out today. Apparently, it was recorded in a solar-powered studio, so that's pretty interesting. I never got into the band, they always seemed to be trying a little too hard to sound clever for my tastes, but the quality of their big hits are undeniable. And to their credit, they made 'I Will Survive' tolerable, so I bear no ill will.

Obits/Gentleman Jesse & His Men at Wills Pub

Two great small bands playing one of this town's finest small venues. Brooklyn's Obits write great songs with intricate guitar work and come with the Sub Pop records seal of approval. Gentleman Jesse & His Men are more raw, more of a garage rock band, but with some very catchy songs. This'll be a sweaty one.

Jeff Daniels at the Plaza Theater

So, the guy from Dumb and Dumber also plays guitar and puts out albums. How about that?
