I first me Katie and learned of The Batey Rehab Project while working on an art event. The photos she sent of the jewelry that is made and sold to fund the non-profit were stunning to say the least. I then found out more about the project and that it benefits areas in the Dominican Republic an area that is near to my heart, I was even more inspired by her project.
I spent 2 weeks in the Dominican Republic while in high school on a service project. It is a beautiful land with even more beautiful people. The Batey Rehab Project's mission is to Partner with locals to provide community development within Haitian Migrant Labor Camps (Bateyes) alongside villagers, enabling the rehabilitation and re-build of their communities.
Celebration High School has chosen The Batey Project to receive proceeds from their up coming 5K.
What: Storm the Batey 5k
Where: Celebration High School and vicinity

From their press release:
At Celebration High School, we have proven that teenagers can change the world. In just three years, we have drilled the very first water well in a community in Uganda, Africa and raised thousands of dollars for local cancer research and aid to cancer patients. These projects were funded through the Celebration High School Storm Run, which has raised over $17,000 for charity in just three years. Our goal with this event is not only to make a positive impact on the world, but to teach our students to give back to others and show them that they CAN change the world. We are setting our sights even higher this year with our third Storm Run, and are partnering
with a CHS alumna, Katie Godkin Morales (Class of 2005). Katie is the Founder and President of a local non-profit organization, The Batey (pronounced Ba-tay) Rehab Project Inc.. Our goal is to raise over $10,000 this year to build homes and a playground for impoverished communities in the southern region of the Dominican Republic. This year’s Storm Run will take place on Friday, December 19th 100% of our donations will go directly to project costs and not administrative overhead. To meet our goals, we need the help of local businesses to be corporate sponsors and join us, along with hundreds of other students and teachers, to help make a positive change in the world. All gifts are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowable under the IRS regulations.
We have designed multiple levels of corporate sponsorship and each level funds a specificproject. Please check out the corporate sponsorship link at stormthebatey.com for the levels of corporate sponsorship. If you are willing and able to sponsor our event, please contact Kathy Feliz at batistak@osceola.k12.fl.us.
