Orlando is hot and lacking in people with morals. And Tyrone is white.

Momatelli (my Mom) sent me a link to a story in which an Orlando Sentinel writer walks himself down memory lane, reminiscing about the Animal Kingdom theme park. His main take-away?

It was hot.

Back when the park was first built, there was no shade and live shows were performed in open-style theatres. Now, it's still hot, but the trees have grown and the theatres are closed-in and air-conditioned. Someone get this man an award. And a glass of water.

I think it's hilarious a newspaper pays someone to write about theme parks when there are passionate, unpaid bloggers all over the world who do it for free every day.(Note: I am a passionate, unpaid blogger who does it for free everyday, so I might be biased.)

To the left of this"article" on the site was a list called "Most Viewed Popular Stories." One was titled Fans line up at Winter Park Borders to get books signed by First Lady, daughter. I thought it'd be neat to see photos of the first lady and her drunk daughter co-mingling with the less-rich white people of Winter Park for exactly 1.5 hours, so I clicked on the story.

No photos of the first lady or her alcoholic daughter. No story really, either. The story, if you can call it that, was that human beings located in the city of Orlando lined up for something.

And that's not the best part.

It took three people to cover this: photographer Joe Burbank, writer Susan Jacobson and writer Bianca Prieto. Three people.

And that's not the best part.

The book the First Lady and her alcoholic daughter wrote is called Leer Para Creer!, or, for the rich white people of Winter Park, "Read All About It," and tells the story of a white child named Tyrone (!!!) not liking reading.

And that's not the best part.

A white woman named Marcia Porch (!!!) kept her daughter named Savannah (!!! and a half !) out of school for this.
Marcia Porch and her 12-year-old daughter, Savannah, arrived at the store at 5:30 a.m. and were second in line. "She is so poised, has such good morals and is such a good role model," Marcia Porch said of Laura Bush. She said it was much more important for her daughter to go see the Bushes than go to school today.
Is this a legal, allowable reason to keep a 12-year old out of school? Is this a legitimate reason to force a child to wake up at the crack of dawn to drive to a Borders bookstore to sit in line for 6.5 hours with a bunch of rich white people?

And what if some other person who is "so poised, has such good morals and is such a good role model" comes into Orlando? Can we expect Miss Porch to keep Savannah out of school again? How many times has Savannah missed school to meet someone who is "so poised, has such good morals and is such a good role model"? Will Savannah ever meet someone "so poised, has such good morals and is such a good role model" in her family, her family's circle of friends, her school, church or other social-circle and not have to miss school to do it?

Maybe it's an Orlando problem. Why do children have to miss school to meet someone with morals in this town? Or, is Savannah to blame? Or is the heat? Do we need more trees to grow and more out-door theatres to be closed in?

Someone help us.
