This past weekend, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer attended the 81st Annual Conference of Mayors in Las Vegas. At the conference, Mayor Dyer, with assistance from Mayor Hudnut, former Mayor of Indianapolis, convened a new task force: Mayors and Metro Universities.
With several success stories coming from the partnership of City of Orlando and UCF, Mayor Dyer was selected to convene the 18-mayor task force. The task force will look at partnerships between cities and universities for improved economic development, children and family programming, volunteer efforts and other activities.
Other news out of the conference includes a call on Congress to pass comprehensive background checks for gun purchases and passing of a resolution urging the federal government to give states the ability to decide for themselves how to handle marijuana policies. Locally medical marijuana is shaping up to become one of the central topics on the Florida elections in 2014.
