This 4th of July weekend brings forth four new releases for your viewing pleasure, most of which, due to the virtue of Wednesday starts, you may have already seen.
PG - Comedy/Adventure - Starring Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig - Directed by Pierre Coffin - Playing at most major multiplexes in 2D and 3D
Rotten Tomatoes % as of writing: 75%
I saw this. Didn't love it. Your kids probably will, though, which is likely all you need to know. You can check out my review for more info.
PG-13 - Action/Adventure - Starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer - Directed by Gore Verbinski - Playing at most major multiplexes
Rotten Tomatoes % as of writing: 23%
I saw this one too. I wouldn't exactly call it a good movie, but there's some fun to be had if you mentally trim the fat. You can check out my review for more info.
R - Stand-Up - Starring Kevin Hart - Directed by Tim Story - Playing at most many multiplexes
Rotten Tomatoes % as of writing: 73%
Kevin Hart is one of the most popular stand-ups in the country whose name doesn't rhyme with "Gooey Meek Lay." He's got a combination of high energy and genuinely funny jokes to make an act that is accessible to a very wide swath of comedy fans. He was probably the best host Saturday Night Live had this last season, and his monologue is a good barometer for whether you want to see this movie. This special was filmed at Madison Square Garden and also features some interstitial vignettes in addition to the stand-up bits. It's probably going to be funny. If you find Kevin Hart funny, you might want to see this. Obviously, I like the guy. If I had a pick of the week (which I don't), this would be it.
R - Comedy/Drama - Starring Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly - Directed by Josh Boone - Playing at many major multiplexes
Rotten Tomatoes % as of writing: 52%
This movie looks one of those upper-middle-class-white-people-with-existential-crises movies that Hollywood can't stop making, sometimes to way more praise than they deserve (As Good As It Gets, you sub-mediocre pile, I'm looking at you). From the Rotten Tomatoes rating above, it doesn't look like unwarranted praise will be a problem for Stuck in Love. The plot follows divorced novelist Kinnear's continue stalking (but in a cute movie way, I'm sure) of his ex-wife (Jennifer Connelly). To deal with that mental instability, he has casual sex with Kristen Bell. What a horrible, torturous life this guy leads. On top of the awfulness of getting it on with Veronica Mars (who's, what, 20 years younger than him?), he has nearly-grown-up kids whose romantic foibles mirror his own. Will everything work out for the best-but-not-quite-what-he-expected for our hero? Will anyone be able to say they relate to this movie without giving away that they're a narcissist and a drip? Only the cinema will tell!
