100,000 SunPass users are still using the batter-operated transponders, but as of January 1, 2016, that number will drop to zero. SunPass won't support them anymore after that date. The reason for the switch, according to Orlando Sentinel, is that Congress wants all the transponders in every state to work in every other state as well.
